Medication

There is a wide range of drugs (medication) available to treat various skin conditions. These include tablets/capsules which are taken orally and cream, gels, lotions and sprays which are applied to the skin. Another option is injections, e.g. topical corticosteroid.

  • Topical corticosteroids, e.g. clobetasol propionate, used to treat various skin complaints, e.g. eczema.
  • Salicylic acid: used to treat warts and verrucas
  • Retinoids: derived from Vitamin A, used to treat skin conditions such as acne and psoriasis.
  • Antibiotics: popular form of treatment for bacterial skin infections. Examples include tetracycline and erythromycin.
  • Anti-fungal medicines: used to treat fungal infections, e.g. ringworm. An example of this is ketoconazole.
  • Antihistamines: medicines which prevent an allergic reaction caused by the release of histamine.

These medications feature in the skin conditions section. Most if not all of these individual skin complaints include them within their treatment subsection. Find out more about these by visiting any of these skin conditions in turn.
